All knitting is composed of only two stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch.

Knit Stitch The working yarn is always to the back of the work. Needle inserts from front to back starting at left side of st, and yarn always wraps from back of needle to front.

Purl Stitch The working yarn is always to the front of the work. Needle inserts from back to front starting at right side of st, and yarn always wraps from top of needle to bottom.
